Buena Park Mayor Connor Traut jumped to an early lead in the OC Board of Supervisors District 4 race, according to results released shortly after polls closed Tuesday night.

Tim Shaw, a trustee on the OC Board of Education, was in a close second. Fullerton Mayor Fred Jung was in third, followed by La Habra Councilmember Rose Espinoza.

Orange County is guaranteed a new supervisor as Doug Chaffee, who has represented District 4 since 2018, is termed out and cannot run for reelection. Unless one candidate secures more than 50% of vote, the top two vote-getters will advance to a November runoff.

The open seat spans Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra, Placentia, Stanton and parts of Anaheim.

Though the five-member board is non-partisan, Chaffee was the first Democrat to serve on its dais in 12 years.

Espinoza has served on the La Habra City Council for a quarter century, including six times as mayor. She’s the founder and executive director of Rosie’s Garage, a nonprofit that providers academic opportunities for low-income children.

Jung, a former Democrat turned independent, has served on the Fullerton City Council since 2020.

Shaw was elected to the La Habra City Council in 2008 and served four terms before winning a seat on the OC Board of Education. He ran for the District 4 seat in 2018, losing to Chaffee by less than 1% of the vote.

Traut was elected to the Buena Park City Council in 2018 and previously served on the Centralia School Board. He is a trial attorney at his own law firm.

The Board of Supervisors, the county’s five-member governing body, oversees a budget of nearly $11 billion and 18,000 employees across various departments, including public health, public safety, social services, animal care and public works.

The registrar of voters will continue to tally votes daily until all are counted. Continue to check back here for updates.
