Authorities are questioning the fiancé of influencer Ashlee Jenae after she died during their recent trip to Zanzibar earlier this month.
Investigators in Tanzania during a news conference on Tuesday confirmed they are speaking with Joe McCann in connection with the case and holding his passport until Jenae’s autopsy is complete. Police previously said McCann, founder of the institutional crypto fund Asymmetric, was not suspected of any wrongdoing.
Jenae, born Ashly Robinson, apparently traveled with McCann to Zanzibar to celebrate her 31st birthday. According to social media posts and photos, it appears McCann popped the question during the vacation.
In a statement shared online Monday, Robinson’s family said she was “found unconscious in her villa and rushed to a local hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later.”
Authorities suspect Robinson died by suicide, local outlet Mwananchi reported. The couple also fought earlier in the night, police said, adding that officers decided to “separate” the couple after a “misunderstanding.”
Few other details about Robinson’s death have been provided.
The Zuri Hotel, where the couple was staying, said it was fully cooperating with local authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania.
“The management of Zuri Zanzibar is deeply saddened by a tragic incident involving one of our guests,” it said in a statement to CBS. “Our sincerest thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and loved ones during this painful time.”
An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
