The Redondo Beach Pier was reopened at 1:30 p.m. after police evacuated it and closed some nearby areas for several hours on Sunday morning as part of an “active investigation.”
Catalina Avenue between Torrance Boulevard and Beryl Street was closed, the police department said in an earlier announcement. “Please stay away from the pier area until further notice,” it read.
Alerts from a police helicopter had also told people to stay off the boardwalk.
Police searched the pier during their investigation, Redondo Beach police spokesperson Lt. Mark Valdivia said shortly before noon. He did not elaborate.
The BeachLIfe Festival was supposed to open nearby around noon on its final day, with musical acts including Sheryl Crow and James Taylor scheduled to perform in the evening. The festival opening was delayed, with police tape blocking the entrance, where some people were already gathered.
The opening was pushed to 1 p.m., organizers said shortly before that time, and then, to 1:30 p.m. as security workers and volunteers made their way inside. The performance schedule was being sorted out.
Earlier, bicyclists using the bike path were stopped and told to use alternative routes around the boardwalk, which also was cordoned off by police tape.
Around 12:45 p.m., several police K-9 units arrived near the festival entrance at the boardwalk on Harbor Drive.
As of 1:30 p.m., no further information was available.
