A 24-year-old man was sentenced Friday, May 8 to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting a 17-year-old outside a Walmart in La Habra nearly three years ago.

Joshua Christopher Brooks pleaded guilty on May 1 to voluntary manslaughter and robbery and admitted sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a gun and committing a crime while out on bail. Brooks had credit for 1,163 days behind bars, nearly 3 1/4 years, according to court records.

As part of his plea deal, a murder charge was dismissed. Brooks also pleaded guilty last week to leading police on a chase and having a concealed loaded unregistered gun in the vehicle and was sentenced on Friday in that case to two years, but had credit for time served, according to court records.

Brooks killed the victim, identified in the criminal complaint as only Isaiah S., on July 7, 2023. Police received several 911 calls about 8:35 p.m. related to the shooting outside the store at the Westridge Plaza shopping center at 1340 S. Beach Blvd., about a block south of Imperial Highway.

Another man was also wounded in the shooting but survived, police said.

Brooks committed the robbery on Jan. 31, 2023, according to court records.
