A Westworth Village city councilman was arrested Friday and faces a charge of felony bribery, according to a statement from the city.
Police said they arrested councilman Halden David Griffith about 1 p.m. after the start of the investigation earlier this month. Westworth Village is about 40 miles west of Dallas.
As of Friday night, Griffith remains in the Tarrant County jail with no bail amount set, according to jail records.
Police emphasized the charge is based on an accusation but did not specify the incident that led to Griffith’s arrest.
“This is still an ongoing investigation which is being conducted thoroughly and in accordance with the law,” Chief of Police Kevin C. Reaves said. “Public officials are held to the same legal standards as all members of the community.”
This case was referred to the Tarrant County district attorney’s office for review and prosecution, the statement said.
“The city received serious accusations from several citizens that a current elected official, and possibly others acting in concert, on Election Day violated your Constitutional rights to a fair election,” Westworth Village Mayor L. Kelly Jones said. “These accusations must not be taken lightly; duty requires they be fully investigated.”
No further information on the case was immediately available.
