
The man authorities believe to have been killed by the “No Jumper” podcaster and rapper known as Ant Jefe died from blunt force trauma in a Los Angeles parking lot, according to officials.
The Los Angeles Police Department told the Daily News on Wednesday that hip-hop personality Ant Jefe, real name Maurice Shelmon, had been detained in connection with a violent crime. Court records indicated he was being held by the LAPD on $1 million bail.
Prosecutors identified the victim as Carl Welch. Los Angeles Medical Examiner records show the victim died in a parking lot on Jan. 31. His death was ruled a homicide.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles District Attorney confirmed to The News that Ant Jefe and an accomplice, Johnnie “North Face” Gray, had been charged in Welch’s murder.
Ant Jefe was scheduled to be arraigned on charges Friday at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. The DA is asking the court to set his bail at $2 million.
The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division made the arrest. The suspects’ connection to the victim is unclear.
Police declined to provide further details.
Ant Jefe’s podcast host Adam 22 told TMZ he was shocked to learn of his colleague’s arrest. He said, as far as he knew, Ant Jefe, who is 35, “wasn’t really in the streets like that anymore.”
