A vehicle collision in Tarrant County escalated into a shooting Saturday when a 41-year-old man allegedly opened fire on the other vehicle and shot a 17-year-old in the head, according to arrest records.

The Fort Worth Police Department said they were notified at 11:38 p.m. of the shooting in Forest Hill in the 3000 block of Mansfield Highway. The 41-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot at the vehicle while he was with his family in a truck, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Police said they interviewed witnesses who were inside the Chevy Silverado with the 17-year-old. Both witnesses said their Silverado was involved in a traffic collision with a Chevy Avalanche before the shooting.

Both vehicles then stopped at a red light near Mansfield Highway and Seminary Drive with the victim’s Silverado in front, according to the affidavit. While at the light, a man in the Avalanche got out of the vehicle and shot at the Silverado, the witnesses told police.

The victim’s Silverado drove away during the shooting to a nearby gas station, according to the affidavit.

Police said the Silverado was shot multiple times in the tailgate and rear windshield. Police said they used license plate reading cameras to find the suspect vehicle. Officers said the vehicle is registered to a 41-year-old man who lives about 1.5 miles away, according to the affidavit.

Around 7:45 a.m. Sunday, officers witnessed a different vehicle leaving the home and failing to stop at a stop sign, police said in the affidavit. Police said they found the 41-year-old man in the back seat during a traffic stop of the vehicle, and he agreed to speak with officers.

Police said the 41-year-old admitted to the shooting. Before the shooting, the man said, his family was going to pick up baby formula, according to the affidavit.

The man told police his son was driving the truck as he sat in the passenger side. He said they were in a traffic collision on Mansfield Highway but continued driving toward Seminary Drive. When they stopped at a red light, the man admitted to getting out of his truck and firing multiple rounds from a handgun at the other vehicle, according to the affidavit.

The handgun was later found at the man’s home, police said in the affidavit.

The man was arrested and is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held at the Tarrant County jail with bail set at $200,000.

As of Monday afternoon, Fort Worth police have not provided an update on the 17-year-old’s condition.
