One person suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and eight people were arrested after more than a dozen shots were fired near a makeshift memorial set up on a Brooklyn street early Saturday, police said.
The barrage of bullets erupted outside an apartment building on Ralph Ave. near East New York Ave. in Brownsville at 2:55 a.m., cops said.
Shots rang out by a memorial of red and white votive candles that had been left on the sidewalk underneath a construction scaffolding. It was not immediately clear who the memorial was for.
When cops arrived at the scene, they spotted two men running around the corner to an apartment building on East New York Ave.
The pair ran into an apartment and refused to come out, sparking a short standoff with arriving police.
During the standoff, another shot was heard coming from the apartment, cops said.
As police responded in droves and an NYPD helicopter hovered above the apartment building, police made entry and found eight people inside the apartment.
One of the residents had a deep gash to his palm, which was later determined to be a gunshot wound, cops said.
All eight occupants were taken into custody to be questioned. The person with the hand wound was taken to a hospital for medical care.
It was not immediately disclosed if any firearms were found in the apartment.
Crime scene investigators recovered 14 shell casings where the shooting took place on Ralph Ave., cops said. Paper plates and bottles were found scattered under the scaffolding where the shooting occurred.
No arrests were made as police continue to investigate.
Saturday’s incident comes as shootings in the city have dropped by 7% this year.
As of May 24, cops investigated 233 shootings — 20 fewer than this time last year.
The number of shooting victims were also down for the year by 10%, from 301 last year to 270, cops said.
