A disturbance investigation in Collin County Sunday ended with a man being fatally shot by a Melissa police officer, police say.

Officers responded to the disturbance at 11:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of East Melissa Road. Melissa police said in a news release that “officers encountered a situation involving an armed individual” and another person while at the residence.

An officer then fired their firearm and a male suspect was shot, police said. The man was given medical aid at the scene and was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said.

No one else was injured during the shooting. Police said the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Texas Rangers are leading the criminal investigation into the shooting, while the Melissa Police Department will conduct a separate administrative review.
