
A man armed with a butcher knife was shot by NYPD officers on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, cops said on Sunday.
The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Ludlow St. near Rivington St., according to the NYPD.
Police responding to a 911 call about a man with a weapon confronted the suspect, who was wielding a butcher knife, and opened fire, striking him at least one time, cops said. Early reports that the suspect stabbed someone and that he charged at police with a weapon before the shooting are currently under investigation, according to police.
The suspect is in critical condition, a police source said. EMS also treated a bystander for an injury, according to the source.
Cops recovered the butcher knife at the scene, a police spokesperson said.
The NYPD asked people to avoid the vicinity of Rivington and Ludlow Sts. in Manhattan due to police activity.
