One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting at Kentucky State University on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The suspected shooter has been arrested, according to Gov. Andy Beshear.
Neither the shooter nor the victims were immediately identified by authorities. The wounded victim was in critical condition, police said.
“We will share more information as available,” Beshear wrote on social media. “Let’s pray for all those affected.”
The shooting happened at a dorm, Young Hall, on the school’s campus in Frankfort, according to Louisville Fox affiliate WDRB. The school is located about 50 miles east of Louisville.
Alerts about an “active aggressor” on campus went out around 3:30 p.m., and police responded immediately to the scene, officials said. Cops are still investigating the exact circumstances of the shooting, and the university remained on lockdown into the evening.
Initial information indicated the shooting was a personal dispute and not a random active shooter event, law enforcement sources told ABC News.
The killing occurred during final exam week at Kentucky State, with the school’s fall semester set to end on Friday.
Chartered in 1886, Kentucky State is the second oldest historically Black university in the state and remains the only public HBCU in Kentucky. It has about 2,200 students.
