Yankees legend Bernie Williams is bound for Broadway.
Williams, who is also a Latin Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist, is joining the band of “Buena Vista Social Club” at Schoenfeld Theatre on Broadway for a limited run, stretching from October 22–November 29.
“I am excited about the opportunity to join ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ because the music was part of my childhood growing up,” he said in a statement.
“I remember my mother listening to this music on Sunday afternoons and it reminds me of wonderful times with my family when I was a kid,” he continued. “The opportunity to play that same music on Broadway in this show is truly a dream come true.”
Williams is the second former baseball player to offer his talent to the production after former Met Jose Iglesias, who made his Broadway debut as the show’s narrator last month. He recently extended what was supposed to be a six-week limited run, and will continue to perform through November 15. And it’s far from the first time he’s showed off his musical skills. Iglesias previously dazzled Mets fans with a performance of his original song “OMG,” released under his stage name Candelita, and it quickly became the team’s unofficial anthem.
When his casting was announced, Iglesias said that on top of returning to New York to perform — he played for the Mets in 2024 —the musical also speaks to his roots in a special way. A Cuba native, he told TMZ he loves that the show, about a legendary musical group from Havana, shines a spotlight on Cuba and Latin American culture.
Inspired by the Grammy-winning 1997 album of the same name, Buena Vista Social Club was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2025, winning five trophies, including best choreography.
The production also recently announced that television and film star Gina Torres — known for her work on “Suits,” “Firefly” and “911: Lone Star” — will also join the Broadway production in the role of Omara Portuondo, for a run starting October 13 through Sunday, November 29.
