A 16-year-old teen was arrested and charged with murder six weeks after another teen was shot in the head and killed as they played with a loaded gun in a Bronx home.
Cops said the unidentified suspect was arrested Monday in the Bronx, and charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
In the hours after John Nunez, 16 died on Aug. 10 in the bedroom of a home on Prospect Ave. near E.169th St., cops said Nunez and two other teens were playing with a pistol.
One of the teens asked Nunez if there was a bullet in the chamber, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
When Nunez told him, ‘No,” the other teen popped out the magazine, pointed the pistol at Nunez, and pulled the trigger, Kenny said at the time.
Nunez was shot around 5:10 a.m. and died at the scene. At the time, Kenny described the shooting as an accident.
The 16-year-old who pulled the trigger ran off, cops said.
Police questioned the third friend, an 18-year-old boy, but the older teen wasn’t charged, cops said.
The teen suspect ran off with the pistol, but left the magazine behind, Kenny said. A shell casing was also recovered at the scene.
The teen cops were looking for has five prior arrests for crimes that include burglary and robbery, Kenny said.
Nunez was a student at Metropolitan High School and was the youngest of three siblings, with two older sisters. He enjoyed playing basketball and video games, his sister said.
