A Halloween movie night isn’t complete without libations, and what’s more on-theme than one inspired by the classic horror film, “The Shining” (1980)?
“Jack and Wendy, your gracious hosts, will be serving their legendary Redrum Sangria, a refreshing beverage that’s simply to die for. Made with Spanish red wine, orange and lemon juice, silver rum, and club soda, this luminous libation has a deep bloody hue and is terrifyingly tangy,” write Ryan Alvarez and Adam Merrin, authors of “The Halloween Movie Cookbook,” to introduce their recipe, inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 psychological horror adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.
“Sangria, which translates to ‘bloodletting’ in Spanish, is a classic cocktail prepared countless ways, but the famed Torrance family recipe will have you screaming with delight,” they conclude

- 1/4 cup silver rum
- 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons club soda
- Orange, lemon, and lime slices, for garnish
- Ice, for serving
DIRECTIONS
In a large pitcher, combine the wine, orange juice, sugar, lemon juice and rum. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then cover the pitcher and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours, until chilled. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve, or up to 3 days.
When ready to serve, add the club soda and stir to combine, then add several citrus slices to the pitcher. Place a few ice cubes and citrus slices into each glass, then pour the sangria and serve. Bone appetit!
