Police shot and killed a 75-year-old man in West Philadelphia this morning after responding to a report of a person with a weapon and being confronted by a man with a gun, authorities said.

Officers responded to the 5400 block of Webster Street just after 7 a.m., said Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore. There, he said, they found a man on his porch with a gun.

As one of the officers approached him, Vanore said, “there was very quickly a confrontation.”

Two shots were fired, he said, one by the man and one by the officer. The man was struck by a bullet and immediately transported to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:33 a.m., Vanore said.

The officer was not injured.

“We believe the male fired his weapon — we have more analysis to do — and then the female officer who was there fired her weapon,” Vanore said.

Police continue to investigate and are scouring the block for evidence, gathering witness accounts, and seeking video evidence.

Investigators will also review body-worn camera video, he said.
