A truck driver who authorities said fell asleep at the wheel before a crash that killed five people on Interstate 20 near Terrell last year was sentenced Thursday.

Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, pleaded guilty in Kaufman County to five counts of manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the June 28, 2025, crash, according to court records.

Judge Casey Blair sentenced Gonzalez-Companioni to 20 years total in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The sentence for each count will run concurrently, meaning he will serve them at the same time, the records show.

The crash happened about 2:40 p.m. on I-20 near Terrell. Authorities previously said Gonzalez-Companioni was driving a semi-trailer when he fell asleep and struck a Ford F-150 carrying a Fort Worth family. The collision then led to a chain-reaction pileup crash involving two other big rigs and at least three other vehicles.

Four people in the F-150 were killed: 52-year-old Zabar McKellar, 45-year-old Krishaun McKellar, 16-year-old Kason McKellar and 79-year-old Billy McKellar. A fifth person in the pickup was taken to an intensive care unit.

Nicole Gregory, 49, of Dallas, also died in the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced last year that it was investigating the crash.

Court records show Gonzalez-Companioni waived his right to a jury trial and entered guilty pleas. The court also made deadly weapon findings, specifying the weapon was not a firearm.

Gonzalez-Companioni received 362 days of jail credit, according to Kaufman County court documents.
