Boy dies after being hit by a school bus in South Jersey, police say

A boy died after he was hit by a school bus Friday afternoon in Gloucester County, police said.

Around 3:40 p.m., Greenwich Township police responded to the area of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive for a “pedestrian motor vehicle crash involving a juvenile and school bus,” Police Chief Louis P. Damminger Jr. said.

The boy, whose age and name were not released, received emergency medical care from nearby residents and arriving officers, Damminger said. The boy was then transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he died.

The incident is being investigated by Greenwich Township police.

Greenwich Township School District will be making counselors available for students returning to class on Monday, Damminger said.

Clonmell United Methodist Church said it will be open to the community Saturday at 9 a.m.

“We are saddened to hear of a tragedy in town that happened today and want to provide a space for our community. We pray for the family, our school faculty and staff, first responders, and anyone affected by this. We love our community and are are present with you during this difficult time,” the church said.
