More than 1,800 pounds of illegal fireworks were confiscated on the Fourth of July as Dallas police worked alongside the Dallas Fire-Rescue’s arson division to stop the sale and use of illegal fireworks.
Both departments recovered fireworks from a location in South Dallas around 5 p.m. Saturday, Dallas police said in a news release.
DFR arson investigators and police determined fireworks were being sold out of a U-Haul and a van in the 3300 block of Elsie Faye Heggins near the intersection of Second Avenue, police said. Authorities confiscated over 1,400 pounds of illegal fireworks that were taken to a secure location by DFR. Police said two citations were issued at the scene.
Police said 400 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized at a separate, unrelated location at 8:17 p.m. in the 4400 block of Penelope Street. Officers issued a citation for possession of fireworks at the scene.
Police said the illegal sale and possession of fireworks can lead to hazardous fires, injuries and property damage.
Police said during Fourth of July celebrations, officers responded to 235 firework calls.
