Through its annual Kids Summer Feeding Campaign, Dallas Morning News Charities is working with local nonprofits to lower food scarcity during the summer for children that rely on school meal programs.
The campaign donates to local charities to provide food support for North Texas families with a goal of raising $300,000 from May 18 through Aug. 17.
“There are children in every community that are hungry,” said board chair Sarah Blaskovich, a food writer at The Dallas Morning News. “There’s someone who lives near you who probably needs help and is receiving help from these feeding campaigns, so I think it should feel personal to everybody.”
Dallas Morning News Charities has raised almost $40 million in donations for local nonprofits since 1986.
The nonprofit partners include All Community Outreach, Arlington Life Shelter, City House, Cornerstone Community Development, Irving Cares, Mission Oak Cliff, Sharing Life, Community Outreach, The MINT Foundation, The Storehouse Community Center, Transition Resource Action Center and the Wilkinson Center.
With the help of the campaign’s donations, Cornerstone Community Development hosts a free, eight-week summer program at Cornerstone Baptist Church for 125 children in South Dallas. The program not only provides a complimentary nutritious lunch, but also teaches entrepreneurial classes and works to fill learning loss from the summer months without school.
“We could not do it without that support,” said Chris Simmons, Cornerstone Community Development pastor and chairman. “As we all know, food prices have skyrocketed over the last several years and we have been able to continue this program free of charge because of the support from the Dallas Morning News Charities.”
Dallas Morning News Charities covers all administrative expenses, so 100% of donations go directly to nonprofit partners.
