A third suspect has been arrested in the death of a man who died after he was beaten unconscious on a Bronx street, then struck by a passing SUV and marked NYPD vehicle, cops said.
Jacob Alvarez, 23, was charged with manslaughter for the attack that led to Isais Portillo’s death on Aug. 8, according to law enforcement.
Alvarez’s accomplices, Luis Torres and Felipe Reynoso, were previously arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault and attempted assault for the attack.
A law enforcement source described Torres and Reynoso as the “main participants” in the assault against Portillo, but said Alvarez took part in the attack.
Alvarez’s arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court was pending Tuesday.
A criminal complaint filed against Torres detailed the attack against Portillo, in which the suspects repeatedly punched and kicked him in the head at College Ave. and E. 166th St in Melrose shortly before 4 a.m.
After beating Portillo senseless, the suspects left him lying on the street, where a white BMW SUV heading east on E. 166th St. struck him about 10 minutes later, cops said. That vehicle left the scene without stopping, said police.
An NYPD Strategic Response Group SUV rolling behind the BMW also ran over the man, but the officers stopped to render aid.
EMS rushed Portillo to Lincoln Hospital, where he died.
Dr. Katherine Flaifel of the city’s Medical Examiner’s office noted in court documents that Portillo died from brain damage and extensive bleeding to his head and face — fatal injuries that were “consistent with numerous strikes from fists,” court documents show.
It was not immediately clear if the injuries he sustained from the two cars would have been fatal.
