Jets cornerback Kris Boyd remains hospitalized after he was wounded in a shooting in New York City on Sunday morning.
Shortly after the incident, Jets coach Aaron Glenn spoke to Boyd and what has eased his mind is that the cornerback remains “in good spirits.”
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s okay. That’s the only thing that went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy for the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd, 29, was involved in the “scuffle” outside Sei Less on W. 38th St. near Seventh Ave. around 2 a.m. on Sunday that resulted in him being shot, police sources have said. After he was shot in the abdomen, Boyd was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
Boyd remains in stable condition, and the investigation is still ongoing with no arrests having been made. The police are still searching for the shooter, who left the scene on foot. On Monday, the NYPD released surveillance footage of the suspected gunman and is asking the public for help in identifying and tracking him down.
“That’s a scary situation,” Glenn said. “Then you start to think about families and things like that and making sure they’re you know they’re okay. I’m just happy again that he’s going to come out alright and everybody else involved is going to come alright and the families are okay.”
In March, the Jets signed Boyd to a $1.17 million contract, hoping he would be part of their special teams unit under Glenn and first-year special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, Boyd suffered a shoulder injury during training camp and was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August.
During his seven seasons in the NFL, Boyd has been known for his special teams prowess, including his previous two seasons with the Texans. Even with him out for the season, Glenn says Boyd remained around the team and has been engaged.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
