A United States Secret Service special agent on former first lady Jill Biden’s security detail mistakenly shot himself in the leg at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday, according to reports.
The accidental gunfire occurred around 8:40 a.m., at Terminal C departures, just outside the American Airlines ticketing area, KYW reported, citing sources. The agent was reportedly inside a black unmarked Chevy Suburban parked by the 1 PIA Way access point and the Pennsylvania Tower, police said.
Emergency medical services were called to the scene and transported the agent to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
The Secret Service in a statement confirmed the agent “suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon at the Philadelphia International Airport during a protective assignment.”
The former first lady was at the airport but was not present when the incident took place, and no other injuries were reported, the Secret Service said.
And while there is no lingering threat, the scene is being held so that an investigation into the matter can be completed.
“The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident,” the statement concluded. “We are grateful for our law enforcement and public safety partners who provided medical assistance.”
There were no reported disruptions or delays at the airport linked to the erroneous gunfire.
