Actress Christina Hendricks, best known as Joan Holloway on AMC’s “Mad Men,” will join KCRW-FM/89.9 in November as part of its fall lineup of guest DJs, the station announced.
“KCRW and the DJs of Morning Becomes Eclectic have always been my musical professors,” Hendricks said in a written statement provided by a spokesperson for the station.
“I kept paper and pen at hand in my car to jot down new artists every morning for years,” she continued. “Now I get to share the way they did.”
Hendricks will be preceded in the November weekly residence by Japanese electronic musician and producer Cornelius in September, and Immersion, the duo of former Wire singer Colin Newman and his wife and frequent musical collaborator Malka Spigel, in October.
Hendricks, like all the station’s guest resident DJs, will have one hour a week to put together whatever music she wants for broadcast from Thursday at midnight to 1 a.m. Friday. If that’s past your bedtime, the shows will be available for streaming on the KCRW app at any time thereafter.
Hendricks’ passion for music hasn’t really been a secret. We spotted her at Just Like Heaven Fest in Pasadena in 2024 taking in a set by Alvvays, if memory serves. She’s friends with Garbage singer Shirley Manson, who officiated the wedding of Hendricks and George Bianchini in New Orleans two years ago.
And in April, Hendricks played a four-hour all-vinyl guest DJ set at Part Time Lover in San Diego, spinning shoegaze and dream pop records by artists such as Beach House, Cocteau Twins, Spiritualized and Warpaint.
Maybe she’ll play some of those tasty discs on KCRW, too, though she could do the greatest thing ever and replicate the scene in one episode of “Mad Men” in which she sang Cole Porter’s “C’est Magnifique” in French while accompanying herself on accordion.
