A man was found dead in Stanton over the weekend and Orange County sheriff’s investigators were working to determine whether a nearby suspected illegal gambling establishment may have had any connection to the homicide, authorities said on Monday, April 6.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to an alley connecting Pacific and Main streets just west of Beach Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, April 5, and found a man in his 30s dead, Sgt. Gerard McCann said.

While detectives were investigating, they were led to a house near Cerritos Avenue and Flower Street, a little over a block north, where they discovered the illegal gambling establishment, McCann said. What led them to the house was not disclosed.

Detectives detained 50 people at the house, ultimately arresting six on outstanding warrants, McCann said. The gambling equipment inside the house was seized by authorities.

Authorities declined on Monday, April 6, to say what types of fatal injuries the man suffered.

The killing was believed to be isolated and McCann said the department did not believe there was any threat to the community.
