The Trump administration and the city’s Mount Sinai Health System have reached an agreement to end pediatric gender-affirming care, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Under the agreement, Mount Sinai, one of the largest health care providers in New York State, will also pay an undisclosed monetary penalty and provide $2 million in free medical care to people suffering harmful effects from such care they received as children, officials said.
“The Department of Justice is committed to holding accountable medical providers that violate federal law and endanger children through so-called gender-affirming care,” U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. “This agreement puts an end to these practices at Mount Sinai and provides meaningful relief for individuals who have already suffered harm.”
Blanche said Mount Sinai had agreed to stop puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries for minors in response to an executive order from President Trump entitled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation.”
The order directed the Justice Department to investigate potential violations of civil law.
Mount Sinai representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The health system in the past has denied any medical liability.
A leading transgender activist denounced the agreement.
“This agreement is in blatant violation of New York law but because the NY AG has been spineless holding clinics to account, they can now openly declare they will discriminate against transgender patients without consequences,” Alejandra Caraballo, a Harvard Law School clinical instructor, wrote on the social media platform Bluesky.
The Justice Department announcement followed similar agreements with Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Connecticut Children’s Hospital.
“A growing number of hospitals, like Mount Sinai, have recognized the medical scandal of sex-rejecting procedures,” Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the civil division, said in a statement.
“While we are grateful when we secure resolutions to end this discredited practice and protect children, we must not and will not rest in our pursuit of justice for the victims it has left behind.”
The Trump administration has sought to put an end to gender-transition treatments for adolescents, claiming the medical procedures harm impressionable and vulnerable children.
Mount Sinai was the second New York City hospital system to confirm its gender-transition treatments for minors were under federal investigation.
Earlier, NYU Langone, disclosed that it had received a federal subpoena demanding information “sufficient to identify each patient” under 18 who had received gender-related treatments since 2020.
That subpoena, as well as the one sent to Mount Sinai, was issued by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, according to the hospitals.
In June, a group of transgender minors and their parents sued the Justice Department, urging a federal judge in Manhattan to block the NYU subpoena.
