A New Jersey man has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of his mother, who was found unresponsive at a home in South Brunswick late last year.

Authorities were called to a residence on Redwood Court on the morning of Dec. 7 for a welfare check and found 47-year-old Veronica Jones unresponsive, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Later that day, her 25-year-old son, Khadir Jones, was arrested and charged with desecration of human remains, My Central Jersey reported.

The suspect was initially described as a relative of the victim, but a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office has since confirmed to Patch South Brunswick that the two are mother and son.

On Tuesday, after a nearly two-month investigation, Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera said Jones was also charged with first-degree murder in his mother’s death.

Officials did not provide additional details about the investigation or say why the charges were upgraded.

Jones is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a pretrial detention hearing, according to NJ Advance Media.
