A New Jersey man has been convicted of killing his father on Christmas Eve two years ago with an ax and a pole saw, authorities announced Tuesday.

Kyle Meyer, a 35-year-old Boonton Township resident, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of his father, 61-year-old Gregory Meyer, on Dec. 24, 2023, at their shared home, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release.

The jury delivered its verdict on Monday after a seven-day trial, prosecutors said. Meyer was also convicted of two weapons charges. He faces up to life in prison for the murder conviction, and his sentencing hearing was scheduled for Feb. 6.

Cops responded to the Meyer home, about 25 miles northwest of Central Park, around 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve 2023. Inside, they found a gruesome scene.

Kyle Meyer struck his father in the left leg with the ax, then sliced his head, hands and fingers with the pole saw, investigators said. There was blood on both tools and fabric from Gregory Meyer’s clothes on the pole saw, according to police.

Cops said Meyer’s attack on his father stemmed from an argument.

Kyle’s aunt spotted him leaving the house just as she was returning. His grandmother had called the police after hearing screaming from the basement. All four members of the Meyer family lived in the home.

Meyer had been released from state prison one year earlier. He spent about 12 months behind bars for possessing a firearm without a permit and was released early on parole.
