A New Jersey woman was arrested on murder and weapons charges after her two sons, ages 5 and 7, were found unconscious at their Hillsborough home, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Police arrested 35-year-old Priyatharsini Natarajan late Tuesday night after her husband, the children’s father, found the couple’s two sons unconscious at the home and notified authorities.
The husband made the discovery after arriving at the family residence shortly after 6:30 p.m. and called 911, telling dispatchers that his wife “did something” to the children, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.
When officers arrived at the Shell Court home, they found the 911 caller and his wife, identified as Natarajan, as well as the two boys, who were unconscious in a bedroom.
Despite life-saving measures by emergency personnel, the children were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released their identities pending positive identification by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Natarajan was arrested at the home and later booked into the Somerset County Jail, where she is being held pending a detention hearing. officials said. She is charged with two counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.
A postmortem examination by the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death, McDonald said, adding preliminary investigation “has revealed that Natarajan caused the deaths of her two children on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.”
The case remains under investigation, and officials said no further information will be available at this time.
