A man jumped off a Carnival cruise ship Friday night, Sept. 18, as it was traveling from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, the company said.
“Carnival Cruise Line confirmed Saturday that a male guest aboard Carnival Panorama jumped overboard,” a Monday statement said. “When notified of a missing guest, the ship’s team initiated search and investigation procedures, including reviewing CCTV footage and notifying both the U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards.
“Carnival is providing support to the family who was traveling with the guest, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” the statement said.
The 56-year-old man went overboard about 50 miles off of the coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Charlie Valor said.
Carnival Cruise Line officials learned Saturday, Sept. 19, of the missing guest and began a search.
The Coast Guard coordinated with the Mexican Navy and nearby commercial vessels in ongoing search-and-rescue efforts, Valor said.
The ship departed from Long Beach on Sept. 13 for a seven-night trip, sailing to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta before returning to Long Beach on Sunday, Sept. 20.
