More than a dozen protestors were taken into custody after activists stormed the lobby of Gov. Hochul’s Midtown offices Thursday, cops said.
Demonstrators carrying signs demanding the governor “tax the rich” occupied the lobby of the building where Hochul’s NYC offices are located on Third Ave. near E. 55th St. shortly before 5 p.m., police said.
The protestors were there to demand the governor protect New Yorkers’ access to healthcare in the face of Trump administration budget cuts to Medicaid and Essential Plan coverage, which could leave up to a million people in the state without health insurance, according to a spokeswoman for the Democratic Socialists of America, one of the groups involved in the demonstration.
“Because of Trump cuts, over a million people this year in New York could lose healthcare,” said Ella Mahoney. “It is possible to pass a budget at the New York level that protects those people.”
The activists were taken into custody after police orders to disperse were ignored. A law enforcement source said 19 protestors were arrested and charged with trespassing.
“I could die if Hochul doesn’t protect my healthcare,” said Olivia Killingsworth, a DSA member who was arrested Thursday. “Hochul needs to stop the cuts and tax the rich.”
Among those arrested were DSA State Assembly candidates Conrad Blackburn, Samantha Kattan and Illapa Sairitupac, Mahoney said.
