For the 250th birthday of the United States, Kim Laidlaw’s “Spirits of ’76: Celebrating 250 Years With Cocktails From Every State” lets readers sip their way across the country, with recipes for a classic and a freshly developed signature cocktail for each state.
Laidlaw selected the Dirty Soda as Utah’s classic beverage.
Whether you drink this the traditional Utah way — booze free, as mandated in the Mormon community — or with a bit of rum, this recipe offers a creamy, tangy twist on a classic cola, according to Laidlaw.
UTAH: Classic Dirty Soda
INGREDIENTS
- 1 ounce dark rum (optional)
- 1/2 ounce coconut syrup
- 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
- 5 ounces diet or regular soda, preferably Diet Coke
- 1/2 ounce heavy whipping cream
- 1 lime wedge, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
In a chilled rocks glass, stir together the rum (if using), coconut syrup, and lime juice. Fill the glass with ice, then top with the soda. Stir gently with a bar spoon. Top with the cream, garnish with a lime wedge and serve.
