An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that killed three people and injured another at a short-term rental house in West Dallas late last month, police said Monday.
Tyson McGriff, 18, was arrested June 5 by the U.S. Marshals’ North Texas Fugitive Task Force, according to a written statement by Dallas police. He is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
The shooting occurred May 26 around 12:20 a.m. in the 3700 block of Vilbig Road, where officers found four people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two died at the scene, while the third died at a hospital. The fourth person was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, according to police.
The deceased were identified as 24-year-old Jaiden Cooper, 20-year-old Jaiclyn Scott and 19-year-old Journie Griffin. Investigators believe they were attending a party at the short-term rental home when the shooting occurred.
McGriff was being held Monday at the Dallas County jail, where his bond has been set at $1,362,000. It was not immediately clear if McGriff has an attorney.
The shooting reignited a longstanding debate over short-term rentals in Dallas, where officials have tried for years to push them from single-family neighborhoods to multifamily and commercial districts.
Council members succeeded in changing zoning rules in 2023 — until a state appeals court ruled last year that Dallas couldn’t enforce the ban, citing a violation of the operators’ property rights.
The city has since appealed the ruling to the Texas Supreme Court.
