CSUF instructor recognized as fellow of American Society of Echocardiography

Cal State Fullerton nursing instructor Mark Gabot was inducted as a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography, a distinction that recognizes an extraordinary commitment to the field of cardiovascular ultrasound through education, research and leadership.

Gabot, a Kaiser Permanente School of Anesthesia faculty member who teaches in Cal State Fullerton’s School of Nursing, is the second Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and the first Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the nation to earn the distinction.

Gabot has built a distinguished body of work in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. He launched an innovative point-of-care ultrasound, or POCUS, curriculum at KPSA using Intelligent Ultrasound simulators.

This work evolved into a comprehensive program that incorporates objective structured clinical examination-based assessment, advanced Mindray ultrasound platforms, live models and in-depth differential diagnosis lectures.

He has also led POCUS workshops through the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, was recently published in ASE Echo Magazine.

“Being named a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography is a deeply meaningful milestone in my career, reflecting years of clinical practice, education and advocacy,” Gabot said. “I hope this recognition inspires other CRNAs to pursue advanced ultrasound training, broadens how echocardiography is viewed within CRNA practice, and contributes to building a more inclusive and collaborative future for cardiovascular ultrasound.”

The American Society of Echocardiography is a leading professional organization dedicated to advancing cardiovascular ultrasound and improving patient care through education, research and the development of clinical standards.

Costa Mesa native serves with Navy Medicine in Italy

Lt. Cmdr. Corey Housepian of Costa Mesa serves with the U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (USNMRTC) Sigonella, Italy. A graduate of Newport Harbor High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the UCLA in 2010.

Housepian is from a family with military ties.

“My family absolutely was the motivation for my service as I had countless examples of inspiring veterans who answered the call to service on both sides,” he said. “My grandfathers both served throughout World War II, one in the Navy and one in the Army; my father served in the Army in the Vietnam War; and numerous cousins completed full military careers from the Korean War onwards.”

Housepian has served in the Navy for 12 years.

“As a medical provider, the combination of mission sets – healing our service members, serving around the world, providing medical services to those in need, and responding to natural disasters – really resonated with me and seemed to offer me an experience that would certainly be impossible in any other practice setting,” he said.

Today, Housepian serves in the Navy Medical Service Corps as a podiatric surgeon. He is the only Navy podiatrist serving in the U.S. European, Central and Africa command area of operations.

USNMRTC Sigonella / Naval Hospital Sigonella is a community hospital in the heart of the Mediterranean in Sicily, Italy.
