Federal offices and other essential offices will be closed July 4 in Dallas-Fort Worth. Groceries and retail stores mainly stay open. Here’s what to know.

This weekend, America will honor 250 years of independence. Fourth of July celebrations in Dallas-Fort Worth will include fireworks, parades, the largest Independence Day drone show in Texas and even the opportunity to view a “lost copy” of the Declaration of Independence at Fair Park. 

Because the fourth falls on a Saturday this year, some federal and local government offices will observe the holiday Friday instead. 

Here’s a look at what will be open and closed on July 3 and 4.

Will grocery stores be open? 

Major grocery stores including H-E-B, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Tom Thumb, Whole Foods, Walmart and Central Market will be open, though some locations will have limited hours. Pharmacies and coffee shops inside stores are subject to closures on a store-by-store basis. 

Costco will close all day Saturday. However, Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club will both remain open through the weekend.

Can I go to the bank, post office? 

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and its Texas branches will remain open Friday but close Saturday. Other banking institutes like Chase and Comerica Bank will follow the same schedule. 

The United States Postal Service will remain open Friday, and deliveries will continue as normal. Offices will close and deliveries will cease on the 4th, resuming Monday. 

UPS and FedEX offices will close Saturday for the holiday; pickup and delivery services will not be offered. 

Many government offices will observe the holiday on Friday, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Social Security Administration and the DMV.

The stock market will also close Friday. 

Will my trash be collected? 

In Dallas, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Plano, McKinney, Denton, Frisco and Arlington, garbage collection will continue as normal. 

In Irving, no garbage pickup will occur on Friday due to city facility closures. 

What restaurants, retail options will be open? 

Chain restaurants will largely remain open through the holiday weekend, including Whataburger, Starbucks, Chic-fil-A, Cotton Patch Cafe, Sonic and Dickie’s Barbecue Pit. However, some restaurants will have limited or special holiday hours.

Local chains, including Shug’s Bagels and most Eatzi’s locations, will remain open. North Texans looking to visit small businesses should check beforehand for closures or altered hours. 

Malls, including NorthPark Center and Galleria Dallas, will remain open for the holiday, though individual store hours may vary.
