The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition happens only every four years, with intervening competitions for younger pianists and amateurs. But June is still piano month in Fort Worth, thanks to the annual PianoTexas International Academy and Festival.
Held at Texas Christian University, it brings together young and slightly less-young pianists, plus teachers and amateurs, for master classes, private lessons and performance opportunities.
In addition to playing solo recitals, participants can compete for chances to perform concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
The schedule also includes solo recitals by prominent concert pianists. This year, three past medalists of the Cliburn Competition are scheduled:
• Vitaly Starikov, 2025 silver medalist, 7:30 p.m. June 13
• Olga Kern, 2001 co-gold medalist, 7:30 p.m. June 20
• Antonio Pompa-Baldi, 2001 silver medalist, 7:30 p.m. June 27
Because of renovations to TCU’s Ed Landreth Auditorium and PepsiCo Recital Hall, this year’s festival, May 27 through June 30, is based at the university’s Van Cliburn Concert Hall, 2900 W. Lowden St. in Fort Worth.
Tickets for the Distinguished Artists recitals at $40, $30 for students. Other performances and master classes are also open to the public. Check pianotexas.tcu.edu for complete schedules and ticketing information. Or call 817-257-7456.
