Duncan Sheik, the voice behind the 1996 single “Barely Breathing” and Tony award-winning composer of “Spring Awakening,” is currently hospitalized.
Sheik’s family offered a health update in a post shared on the singer’s Instagram page Wednesday evening.
“Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition,” the statement said.
“Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time,” it continued. “We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support.”
The reason for his hospitalization remained unclear as of Thursday.
The news comes ahead of the opening of the new musical “Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen,” which is an adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s manga graphic novel of the same name. Sheik, 56, wrote the score for the show, with its first preview set for Sept. 25 and opening scheduled for Oct. 15.
Sheik also composed the music for the hit Broadway show “Spring Awakening,” which debuted in 2006 with a stacked cast, including Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, Skylar Astin and John Gallagher Jr., among others. It ran for 859 performances and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, before closing in 2015.
A “Spring Awakening” revival show is also slated to open at Studio Seaview later in the fall. Previews are set to begin Nov. 27, with an official opening set for Dec. 17.
Sheik first shot to fame in 1996 with his hit single “Barely Breathing,” which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1998. While he ultimately lost the award to Elton John, Sheik went on to earn a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2008 for his work on “Spring Awakening.”
