Boy, 13, riding on back of moped killed in crash with truck in Queens

A 13-year-old boy riding on the back of a moped was killed in Queens Monday when his friend swerved to avoid an open car door and crashed into a moving truck, police said.

The boy operating the moped, also 13, swerved to avoid colliding with a door suddenly thrown open by the driver of a parked vehicle on 162nd St. near 45th Ave. in Flushing about 12:35 p.m., cops said.

But in doing so the teen driver lost control of the moped and hit the truck, whose driver, like the moped, was heading south on 162nd St.

The moped passenger fell off the moped and struck the truck’s rear wheel.

Medics rushed both teens to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Queens, where the boy who was riding on the back of the moped died. His name was not immediately released.

The boy who was operating the moped is expected to recover, police said.

Neither the truck driver nor the driver of the parked vehicle were hurt. Both remained at the scene.

No charges were immediately filed as police continue to investigate the crash.
