A 19-year-old Camden man was fatally struck early Tuesday by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer, Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay said Wednesday.
Angel Saravia-Estrada was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, MacAulay said.
The officer, who was not named, works for the Camden County Police Department, MacAulay said.
The crash occurred around 12:50 a.m. Tuesday in the area of westbound Admiral Wilson Boulevard and 16th Street.
Saravia-Estrada allegedly had entered the roadway as a pedestrian and was hit by a vehicle operated by the off-duty officer, MacAulay said.
The off-duty officer remained at the scene, which was investigated by fellow officers from the Camden County Police Department.
MacAulay said an on-duty officer with the Delaware River Port Authority Police Department also stopped at the scene to help the downed pedestrian.
The case is being investigated by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Response Investigation Team, MacAulay said.
