The cause of death for Chad Lowe and Kim Painter’s 13-year-old daughter, Fiona, who was also the niece of actor Rob Lowe, has been released.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Fiona was pronounced dead at a hospital on Tuesday at 1:14 a.m., just weeks before what would have been her 14th birthday. The manner was ruled a suicide.
Fiona was the second-oldest child of the “Pretty Little Liars” alum and his actress wife, who also share daughters Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10. The couple married in 2010, three years after Lowe’s divorce from Oscar-winner Hilary Swank.
They confirmed Fiona’s death in a statement to People on Tuesday night, describing her as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative, and loved to dance.”
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” they said.
“She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents,” the couple continued. “In fact, she was the light of our lives.”
The family concluded their statement by encouraging those “struggling with mental health” to reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for help.
Lowe’s father, Chuck Lowe, also paid tribute to his late granddaughter on Wednesday with a post on Instagram. It featured a photo of Fiona smiling in a swimming pool.
“Rest in peace sweet Fiona,” he captioned the image.
