Craig Melvin grills Martha Stewart on dragging him into costume controversy

“Today” host Craig Martin directly pressed Martha Stewart on why he was dragged into the controversy surrounding her regretful decision to dress as a homeless person for Halloween.

Stewart posted a photo of herself looking dirty and disheveled while holding a sign reading “I am hungry. Help Me!” over the holiday weekend.

She responded to rampant criticism over her choice of costumes by deleting the post and issuing an apology for her perceived insensitivity. She also told a live audience at a Tuesday event in Florida that her decision to come up with that costume was the result of Melvin spilling chocolate on the white sweater she planned to wear on Halloween night.

“And why was I dragged into it?” Melvin asked Stewart on Friday’s “Today” show.

Stewart apologetically explained she was making a joke.

“I was giving a talk and I just made a joke that you had spilled chocolate on me so I couldn’t wear that costume, which I had planned to wear on Halloween night to this party,” she told the host.

Melvin appeared empathetic.

“And that became part of the story,” he summarized before pressing Stewart to clarify he wasn’t at fault.

The 85-year-old lifestyle entrepreneur obliged.

“And it wasn’t your fault about the chocolate,” Stewart assured Melvin.
