A 54-year-old man was fatally run over by a garbage truck driver backing into a private carting garage in Brooklyn, cops said Sunday.
Franklin Torres was inside the carting facility on Stanley Ave. near Berriman St. in East New York when a 58-year-old man backing a 2024 Freightliner garbage truck into the building struck him just about 4:55 a.m. Wednesday, cops said.
Torres fell to the ground and the truck rolled over him before coming to a stop, cops said.
Medics rushed Torres to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died later that day.
The truck’s driver remained at the scene. Police are still investigating and have made no arrests.
Torres lived in Yonkers, N.Y. according to cops.
“We are deeply saddened,” Josh Haraf, a vice president at Interstate Waste Services, said in a statement Sunday. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones. We are cooperating fully as the investigation continues and are unable to provide further comment at this time.”
The company’s subsidiary, Action Environmental Services, runs the garage. A company representative didn’t say if Torres was an employee and an NYPD spokesman could not say Sunday if Torres worked at the garage.
