A man was struck and killed while crossing Alton Parkway in a crosswalk in Irvine Wednesday night, June 10, and police were searching for a dark-colored vehicle and its driver.

The crash occurred just before 8:55 p.m. at Alton and Irvine Center Drive, police said in a statement, just west of the 5 Freeway and near the Irvine Spectrum.

The driver was headed westbound on Alton Parkway when the vehicle collided with the pedestrian, who was walking northbound.

It was unclear if the driver or the pedestrian was crossing the intersection on a red light.

Police asked for the public’s help in finding the fleeing driver or the vehicle, which “likely has damage to the front,” they said.

Investigators were not sure of the type of vehicle involved, said Officer Ziggy Azarcon, a police spokesperson.

Irvine Center Drive and Alton Parkway are both six-lane roads, each with two dedicated left-turn lanes and one dedicated right-turn lane on all four sides of the intersection.

The man was not identified by police pending notification of his relatives.

A witness was able to provide a description of the vehicle. Police asked that anyone with information about the collision to contact Detective Hank Gallegos at 949-724-7024.
