The body of a woman missing after a medical helicopter crash near Catalina Island on Wednesday, Sept. 30 was found on Thursday night, authorities said.
The woman had been missing since the Wednesday evening crash, which killed two others and left two others injured. The Coast Guard searched for the woman by boat, helicopter and submersible following the crash, alongside the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Avalon Sheriff and Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The woman was identified by family as Catalina Hernandez, 45, with family telling NBC4 that she had suffered an allergic reaction to shrimp on Wednesday night and was being airlifted to the mainland for medical attention. Hernandez’s son was one of the injured passengers.
A crew member was listed as seriously injured in Federal Aviation Administration records.
The two others who died in the crash have not been publicly identified, but were described by Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna as a male helicopter pilot and female nurse.
The helicopter, a REACH Air Medical Services Eurocopter EC135, was taking off from the island when it crashed around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The intended destination and cause of the crash were not immediately known.
The National Transportation Board and Federal Aviation Administration will investigate.
