Cameos shrank but microphones bloomed on Who Asked?, the long-overdue second album from Grammy-nominated Dallas jazz duo Domi & JD Beck. The record comes out July 31.

On 2022’s Not Tight, they collaborated with everyone from Herbie Hancock to Snoop Dogg to Anderson.Paak, who signed the duo and got them a deal with Blue Note Records. For the new Blue Note disc, Allen-raised drummer JD Beck and French-born keyboard whiz Domitille Degalle – who performs as Domi Louna – dispense with the celebrity guest stars and push their own voices closer to center stage. They sing on 12 tracks, compared to just six on their debut.

“When we release an instrumental song, some people are like, ‘That’s not a song. There’s no singing.’ But then when we really take a chance and sing, other people are mad and say, ‘Why are they singing?,'” Louna told The Dallas Morning News in 2022.

The duo’s been teasing the release with song snippets on social media. But so far, no singing – just the band’s signature style of playing like greased lightning.
