Paul Campbell, 64, was arrested on a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child Wednesday, according to a Plano Police Department news release. A student alleged that the inappropriate physical contact happened at Brinker Elementary, where Campbell worked as a teacher. He has been employed with the district for more than 25 years.
“This action is necessary to ensure appropriate action is taken prior to the return of teachers and staff from summer break and to maintain the health and safety of students,” said Superintendent Theresa Williams during the meeting.
In a statement, Plano ISD said the alleged conduct is “reprehensible.” The district said it does not tolerate conduct that threatens student safety and maintains safeguards, like background checks, training and mandatory reporting.
The district is fully cooperating with police, it said.
The vote Thursday evening was unanimous. A teacher can request a hearing after receiving the notice.
During public comment, Cody Weaver, a former trustee, said the board has not done an adequate job of responding to teacher misconduct.
“You could not brush this one under the rug,” Weaver said. “Plano ISD, under Theresa Williams’ leadership, has proven to be reactive, not proactive.”
