A chemical leak at a facility along the 500 block of South Cypress Street in La Habra prompted a hazmat response and a shelter-in-place order in the surrounding area on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The leak occurred at a facility that produces household cleaning products when a residual product mixed with another chemical in a container, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Aaron Katon said. The reaction caused an orange smoke plume to rise from the factory.
Los Angeles County fire crews led a hazmat response while La Habra police secured the area. As the departments assessed the incident, they issued a shelter-in-place order in nearby areas that has since been lifted, Katon said.
They plan to continue to monitor the air quality, but Katon said the hazmat team determined the chemical produced was inert and should pose no danger to residents.
The business will continue with cleanup of the leak at the facility.
“Things worked exactly as they should and the business owner is prepared to move forward with the mitigation,” Katon said.
