A fugitive wanted for stabbing a woman to death in front of her 7-year-old son during a barbecue at a Brooklyn park was captured trying to fly out of Newark Liberty International Airport, police said Tuesday.
Deandre Creary, 25, was extradited to New York City from New Jersey on Tuesday, just over two weeks after Port Authority police at Newark Airport recognized him as a fugitive from justice wanted for the fatal stabbing of 30-year-old Shakeema Davis in Brooklyn’s Lincoln Terrace Park, police said.
The NYPD and Port Authority Police nabbed him at the airport on Aug. 24.
Before he was captured, Creary had shaved his head to conceal his identity. Surveillance images the NYPD released two days after Davis’ killing show the suspect with a full head of hair.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the killer hounded Davis “for sex” before stabbing her during a cookout at the Crown Heights park at about 12:40 a.m. Aug. 18.
“She keeps saying no,” Kenny said. “They’re arguing. It’s verbal; it turns physical. After she throws a drink on him, he begins to assault her. She actually picks up the barbecue in an attempt to get him away from her and strikes him with the barbecue.”
“Once he’s struck with the barbecue, he pulls out a knife and stabs her three times,” Kenny said.
Davis’ son, who witnessed the killing, was not hurt.
Davis’ killer warded off a crowd of about 20 people who witnessed the slaying by swinging his knife at them before running off, Kenny said.
Medics rushed Davis to Brookdale University Hospital, where she died less than an hour later.
“She was a wonderful woman,” her mother said at the time. “Her son is with me now. He witnessed it. He’s doing as well as can be expected.”
Davis had only gone on one date with Creary, but he became obsessed with her, the victim’s mother said.
“He wasn’t her type. Some people won’t take no for an answer,” she told the Daily News at the time of her daughter’s death. “She went out on a date and felt, ‘Oh no, not that one.’”
“I don’t have the words for him,” she said about Creary before his capture. “He was a coward. A weak man. People like that aren’t supposed to be on earth.”
Shortly after the killing, police released a surveillance image of a shirtless Creary with a full head of hair, claiming he was wanted in connection with the killing and asking the public for help in finding him.
Creary was charged Tuesday with murder, endangering the welfare of a child and weapon possession. He lives in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, according to the NYPD.
His arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court was pending Tuesday.
