Trader Joe’s has agreed to pay some customers an estimated $102 each to settle a class-action suit over improper receipts.
But unless they’ve been notified they’re eligible, claimants will have to come up with proof dating back six years.
The $7.4 million settlement arose from allegations that too many digits from credit cards or debit cards were printed on receipts from certain stores between March 5 and July 19, 2019. That potentially created a risk of identity theft.
The location of the stores involved hasn’t been made public. The retailer says the receipt problem involved only a small number of transactions and that there have been no reports of identity theft arising from it.
Settlement notices mailed or e-mailed to some customers include an identification number that can be used to file a claim. Customers who didn’t receive such a notice can still submit a claim, but they’ll be asked to state the dates on which they received improperly printed receipts, which displayed the first six and last four digits of the payment card number.
The estimated payout is $102.45 per person, based on a count of 757,663 affected customers. The actual amount will depend on the number of valid claims.
Claims must be filed before June 9 at www.TJ-FACTAsettlement.com, by calling (888) 444-7415 or by mailing documentation to the address provided at the website.
Payments are expected in September, the settlement notice says.
