Three men were each sentenced to 22 years to life in prison in Manhattan on Tuesday for the savage and senseless murder of a Hamilton Heights man who was working towards getting his life back on track after his release from prison.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Cori Weston handed down the terms to Naquan Anderson, 28, Trevor Carpenter, 44, and Alvin Nelson, 45, for the May 3, 2025, killing of 33-year-old Jervey Barfield.
The three men pursued Barfield after he argued with Nelson outside a deli on W. 142nd St. and Frederick Douglass Blvd., according to evidence presented at their August trial. They confronted him about a block away, with another fight breaking out. Nelson and Anderson stabbed the man repeatedly in the face, neck, and torso, while Carpenter beat him, jurors heard.

Carpenter continued to punch Barfield, an aspiring fitness trainer, as he lay on the ground motionless, charging documents detail.
Anderson and Nelson were found guilty of murder on Aug. 11, and the jury convicted Carpenter of manslaughter. All three men were found guilty of gang assault. The Daily News reached out to their attorneys for comment on Tuesday.
Barfield had recently been released from prison on parole following a 2023 attempted assault conviction and was trying to get his life together, his loved ones previously told The News. He lost his big brother, Shannon Bates, to gun violence when he was a child.
“The defendants caused a personal dispute to spiral into deadly violence when they brutally attacked Jervey Barfield,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement.
“Mr. Barfield was unarmed when the defendants repeatedly stabbed and beat him, leaving him helpless on a Manhattan sidewalk.”
