An armed suspect connected to the death of a woman in an apparent domestic violence dispute in Tustin was fatally injured Monday when he advanced toward police officers with a knife, resulting in shots being fired by officers, authorities said.
Officers responded around 2:30 p.m. Monday to the Briarwood Apartments in the 1400 block of Walnut Avenue to reports of a domestic violence incident, according to the Tustin Police Department.
The responding officers contacted the man at the home, where they located an unresponsive woman lying on the floor, police said.
The man advanced toward officers with a knife, resulting in an officer-involved shooting, officials said. He was immediately rendered life-saving measures, but later pronounced dead at the scene.
“It was discovered that the female at the scene was deceased and may have been for some time prior to the officers’ arrival,” the police department said in a statement.
The relationship between the suspect and woman remains under investigation.
Police said Orange County District Attorney’s Office investigators responded to the scene as part of its protocol for officer-involved shootings and was conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
